International News: Authorities in El Salvador foil plot to plant bombs on the day of President Bukele’s inauguration

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Authorities in El Salvador announced the disruption of a plot to plant explosives across the nation, timed to coincide with President Nayib Bukele’s upcoming inauguration on Saturday.

According to the National Police, the scheme involved individuals identified as “veterans” from the country’s 1980-1992 civil war, hinting at former leftist guerrillas.

According to ABC News, images of small explosive devices with fuses and bags of ammonium nitrate were shared by the police on their social media platforms.

They disclosed that the explosives were confiscated during raids and were allegedly intended for gas stations, supermarkets, and government offices.

Among the locations where explosives were discovered was Guazapa, a former stronghold of rebels, situated on the outskirts of the capital city, San Salvador.

The police attributed the plot to a clandestine entity named the “Salvadoran Insurrection Brigade” and claimed that José Santos Melara, a former congressman from the leftist FMLN party, had funded these plans.

While Bukele secured a second term in the February presidential elections, his administration has faced criticism for its aggressive anti-gang initiatives and controversial reforms, such as reducing congressional seats.

Despite accusations of undemocratic tendencies, Bukele’s popularity has surged, fueled by his tough stance against street gangs that previously terrorized communities with violence and extortion.
