By Breaking Belize News Staff: Four Belize City fishermen were arraigned Friday on several fisheries offenses after being caught with 326 undersized conchs. Vidal Gabriel Orellano, 31; Higinio Rivero, 65; Lincoln Mayers, 20; and Cesar Alexander Mazariegos, 34, appeared in court, where they denied the charges and claimed only licensing violations.

The group, arrested on May 18, 2024, near Water Caye, pleaded not guilty to possession of undersized conchs and were granted bail at $2,000 each. Orellano, found without a valid fishing license, and Rivero, fishing outside his licensed area, pleaded guilty to their respective charges, receiving fines. Mayers, charged with obstruction for allegedly disposing of the illegal catch, pleaded not guilty.

All four are set to return to court on June 25, 2024, for trial on the possession charge and Mayers’ obstruction case.
