By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In the wake of raging wildfires across Belize, the Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic (BWRC) has issued a warning about the catastrophic toll the blazes are having on Belize’s wildlife.
In a somber post shared on social media, the clinic revealed the heartbreaking aftermath of the fires, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced measures to protect both human habitats and the fragile ecosystems they encroach upon.
The post, accompanied by distressing images of deceased wildlife, serves as a poignant reminder of the grim reality faced by countless animals amidst the relentless blaze.
“While we continue to struggle to keep human houses and livelihoods safe from wildfires everywhere, these 3 fire victims were found by just one small crew fighting fires in our backyard in the last couple of days,” the post said.
“Remember it’s baby season for many species now. And those animals stand not a chance to escape,” BWRC added.
The BWRC’s plea extends beyond immediate rescue efforts, emphasizing the imperative for comprehensive strategies to mitigate the risk of future wildfires.
“For human health, for our environment and for the wildlife within it, we need to adapt to dry and heat now and improve fire controls, management and enforcement. Or there won’t be wildlife or forests left, and then we humans are out of luck as well,” BWRC expressed.
Amidst the devastation, the BWRC reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to aiding wildlife in distress, urging individuals to report any sightings of imperiled animals to their hotline (6155159).
However, they also emphasized the importance of prioritizing personal safety.
