By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize stumbled for a second time at FIBA U18 AmeriCup dropping Wednesday’s game 109-73 to Argentina at the Estadio Obras Sanitarias in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

With a 1-2 record, Belize finished fourth in Group B and will face Group A winners, the Dominican Republic (3-0), in the Quarterfinals on Friday for a berth in the FIBA World Cup. Argentina (1-2) finished second and will face Group A’s third place Venezuela (1-2) on Friday.

Group A winners, the United States (3-0), will play against Group B’s fourth place Puerto Rico (0-3), while Group B’s third seeded Brazil (1-2) will match up against Group A’s second place Canada (2-1).

Josiah Moseley led the Belize attack with 23 points while Douglas Lagford and Elijah Favela netted 18 points each. Moseley snatched seven rebounds, made three assists, four steals, and three blocks. Langford grabbed 12 boards, and made one assist and one block.

Belize tied the game at 23-23 in the first quarter but couldn’t keep up after that, shooting 38.81 percent from the field (26/67) while netting only seven of 22 three pointers (31.82 percent). Belize totalled 73.68 percent from the charity stripe converting 14 of 19 attempts.

Argentina’s shooting beyond the arc proved the key for the South Americans to establish control converting 11 of 24. They shot 50.68 percent converting 37 of 73 field goals. They were also very effective in free throws, sinking 24 of 31 for 77.42 percent.

Argentina outrebounded Belize 48-31 and also outplayed Belize in turnover points (24/13), fast break points (19/11), second chance points (22/8), points in the paint (52/30), and points from the bench (19/7).

The game had nine lead changes, but that was only in the first quarter and beginning of the second when Belize played very competitively. Belize’s biggest lead was three points.
