Three Griga Cycling Club cyclists hit by vehicle on Hummingbird Highway while training, one suffers fractured shoulder

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Young Tamron Morris of the Griga Cycling Club, who recently represented Belize at the Pan American Road Championship in San Jose dos Campos, Brazil, found himself hitting the pavement along with Reynaldo White on the Hummingbird Highway after being hit from behind by a motor vehicle on Monday afternoon as they were on a training ride. White fared off the worst with a fractured shoulder.

Deshane Cacho was riding a bit ahead and escaped unhurt.

The accident occurred just after 1:00 pm by Mile 5 on the Hummingbird Highway as the cyclists were returning from a 40 mile-ride that had taken them to Mile 20.

“We are deeply saddened and concerned to report that three of our cyclists were struck from behind by a vehicle while training on the highway today,” Annis Alma Gordon, secretary of the Griga Cycling Club, wrote on social media late Monday.

“One cyclist (White) has returned home with a fractured shoulder and numerous bruises, another sustained minor injuries, and one miraculously escaped unharmed.”

Gordon said the driver stopped and waited for police to arrive. A passerby took the boys to the Southern Regional Hospital where they were treated an released.

“We implore all drivers to exercise utmost caution and consideration when sharing the road with cyclists. Please slow down and be vigilant when you see them. Your attentiveness and care can prevent accidents and ensure the safety of everyone on the road. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding,” Gordon said in her post.

Cyclists use the roads daily for training purposes and, it goes without saying, that they risk their lives every day on the highways.
