Belize Cabinet condemns hospital attack; Vows crackdown on gangs

By Horace Palacio: The Belize government expressed outrage and vowed to crack down on gang activity following a June 1st incident where armed individuals stormed the San Ignacio Community Hospital. In a statement released today, June 11th, the Cabinet assured the public that no medical practitioners, staff, or patients were harmed during the incident.

The government has ordered an escalated operation to apprehend not only those directly involved in the attack but all gang members operating in the San Ignacio and Santa Elena areas.

Furthermore, the Cabinet has pledged full support to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Belize Police Department in their efforts to address security concerns of businesses in the region. An internal assessment of the police command structure is underway, with potential changes to follow.

To ensure the safety of healthcare workers and patients, the government has also directed teams from the Ministry of Health & Wellness and the Ministry of Home Affairs to immediately assess security protocols at all public health facilities across the country.
