By Horace Palacio: In a surprise announcement, Eddie Webster, the longest-serving Clerk of the National Assembly in Belize’s post-independence history, has tendered his resignation. Webster, who has held the role for 14 years, will be leaving his post at the end of this month.
Webster’s tenure began in 2010 under the Barrow administration, and he continued to serve under the Briceno administration, a move that surprised many political observers. Throughout his time in office, Webster was responsible for overseeing the complex operations of the National Assembly, including managing meetings, committee sessions, and various administrative tasks.
While Webster’s contributions to the National Assembly are undeniable, sources indicate that his relationship with the House Speaker was fraught with tension. Despite these challenges, Webster championed technological advancements, notably the introduction of live streaming of House meetings on YouTube, increasing transparency and public access to parliamentary proceedings.
The government has yet to reveal who will succeed Webster, leaving the future leadership of the National Assembly’s administrative operations uncertain.
