By Breaking Belize News Staff: Earl Baptist, accused of the murder of businessman Leslie Norman Gillett, is back behind bars as he awaits his fate next Thursday, June 27, 2024. The trial, which began on June 17, saw the DPP Crown present 15 witnesses, relying heavily on the testimonies of Sgt. Santiago Perez and Sgt. Rollington Fuller.
Sgt. Perez extracted surveillance footage showing two shooters, one identified as Baptist, opening fire on Gillett. Sgt. Fuller confirmed Baptist as one of the shooters. In his defense, Baptist claimed, “It wasn’t me,” citing his father as an alibi, a point not corroborated by the defense.
Baptist’s attorney, Leeroy Banner, challenged the identification evidence, arguing the footage was unclear. Justice Derick Sylvester has reserved his ruling for June 27.
