Judiciary comes home – renovated High Court building to be officially reopened Monday

By Aaron Humes: The former Treasury Building, which for more than 20 years has served as the home of the Magistracy and Judiciary, will be re-opened on Monday morning, July 1 at 9 a.m.

Following the collapse of the roof during Hurricane Lisa in 2022, the Government of Belize provided substantial funding for the renovation and refurbishment of the Court Building for which the Judiciary is extremely grateful.

The renovations to the Court Building reflect the Government of Belize’s unwavering commitment to enhancing infrastructure and supporting the judiciary’s delivery and access to justice to the people of Belize. The significant infrastructural upgrades align with the ongoing successful judicial reforms spearheaded by Chief Justice Louise Esther Blenman.

These reforms are increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of the Judiciary is already yielding significant results. The Judiciary remains committed to providing excellent service to the litigants and Belizeans while upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and transparency. The renovations and refurbishment will facilitate better service to the litigants and people of Belize.

The newly renovated and refurbished Court Building consists of four courtrooms, a main courtroom, a mediation room, a conference room, and offices for the staff. The renovated and refurbished Court Building is designed to support the Judiciary’s mission of delivering high-quality and efficient justice services. The enhancements include the provision of physical access to the disabled and upgraded courtrooms to accommodate the increasing levels of litigation.

The commissioning ceremony will be graced by the presence of Governor General Dame Froyla Tzalam, Prime Minister John Briceño; Leader of the Opposition, Moses Barrow; Government Ministers, members of the Judiciary, representatives from the diplomatic corps, members from the legal fraternity, public and civil officials, distinguished guests and members of the press.

Chief Justice Blenman expresses her sincerest gratitude to the Government of Belize, the Chief Engineer, Mr. Evandale Moody, Mr. Oscar Montero, Mr. Victor Espat, the contractors and Deputy Registrar of the High Court, Ms. Leonia Duncan for their outstanding support on this project.
