By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The US National Hurricane Center has declared a hurricane watch for Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula, dotted with beach resorts popular with tourists.
Beryl is moving west northwest and is forecast to move over the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico Thursday night or early Friday.
Beryl is forecast to weaken as it passes near Jamaica today. However, Beryl is forecast to remain a hurricane in the northwestern Caribbean.
The Mexican Government has since deployed the army, air force and national guard for emergency response protocols in the 3 Yucatan states.
Some 120 shelters opened and nearly 4,900 troops on guard on the peninsula.
Businesses and residents in Cancun continue to prepare by securing their buildings.
