By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: During this morning’s press briefing, Chief Met Officer Ronald Gordon informed the country as powerful Category 4 Hurricane Beryl is approaching Jamaica as of this morning.
Beryl is moving at the west northwest at 20 miles per hour.
Some weakening is expected and Beryl is forecast to continue on the same track today.
Chief Met Gordon said that Tropical Storm force winds extend in the Southern quadrant some 60 to 80 miles from the center so the Northern parts of Belize can be affected by Tropical Storm conditions as Beryl moves towards the Yucatan Peninsula.
A tropical storm watch remains in effect from Belize City north to the Belize- Mexico border and includes San Pedro and Caye Caulker.
Gordon noted that based on the trajectory, Beryl will begin to affect northern Belize late Thursday night into Friday morning with increased rainfall, gusty winds.
“We do not expect, based on the current trajectory that Belize City area will be significantly impacted. There will be rains but not as much as up north. So we urge residents in those areas to continue to monitor. There is the potential and possibility that the tropical storm watch be upgraded to a warning later today or early tomorrow,” Gordon explained.
Belizeans are urged to remain vigilant and prepared.
