By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The inauguration of a cheese factory in Shipyard, Orange Walk District on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, marks an important milestone in the milk industry.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE), the Northern Dairy Farmers, who are dairy producers, have constructed this factory with the aim of enhancing value-added processing for milk and dairy products produced in Shipyard. Notably, Shipyard’s milk production competes with that of Spanish Lookout.
During the opening ceremony, MAFSE Minister, Jose Abelardo Mai, emphasized the significance of local production over imports. Minister Mai highlighted the challenges faced by local producers in obtaining machinery and other resources for value addition, while importers bring in subsidized products from abroad to compete with local products. Minister Mai expressed optimism for a future where Belizean products no longer need to compete with imports.
Following the inauguration, the Minister and other invited guests toured the new cheese production facilities.
