Community Policing launches annual Summer Swimming program in Belize

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, 50 youths from the Belize District have commenced the Annual Summer Swimming program.

This is a collaborative effort between the Community Policing Unit and the Belize Coast Guard.

“We are supporting our young people as we firmly believe that teaching swimming can reduce drowning incidents, which is a significant public health concern, particularly among children and teenagers.  It can help build positive relationships between law enforcement and the community, fostering trust and cooperation,” Commander of Community Policing Howell Gillett said.

“Swimming is a valuable life skill that promotes physical fitness, discipline, and confidence in young people.  Also, water safety can prevent risky behaviors near water, reducing the need for emergency rescues and interventions. Importantly, it can ensure that all children, regardless of socioeconomic status, have access to this important skill, promoting equality and community well-being,” Gillett added.

The program runs from July 8to 18, 2024.
