By Aaron Humes: Addressing the 12th annual meeting of directors of civil aviation of North and Central America and the Caribbean, Prime Minister John Briceño announced plans for no less than three new major airports to be built alongside the venerable Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA) in Ladyville.
Current projections show that 300 percent more passengers will utilize the PGIA in the next 15 years, the P.M. said, necessitating a US$125 million expansion planned under #PlanBelize.
Previously discarded after the investment team was found not to be up to scratch, it is the dream of the Government to put in place a full airport on Ambergris Caye as well as in Placencia, the site of today’s conference. Additionally, a new “National Airport” would be built to handle and manage local air traffic and build regional routes – it was not clear where this would be built.
Regional connectivity was also a theme of the Prime Minister’s address, where he remarked that Belize, despite being a bridge between Central America and the Caribbean, has long had to deal with cumbersome routes through Central America or the United States to get to the Caribbean.
“In looking forward, it is imperative that we focus on key areas that are vital for the sustainable development and security of our aviation sector. Aviation security and facilitation stand at the forefront of our discussions as we strive to ensure the safety and efficiency of air travel within our region. By sharing best practices and collaborating on innovative solutions, we can enhance our collective efforts in safeguarding our skies and protecting our passengers. Furthermore, effective implementation of ICAO’s standard and recommended practices is essential for harmonizing aviation regulations and procedures across the Americas. By working together to overcome the challenges and barriers to compliance, we can strengthen our aviation systems and promote seamless connectivity within the region,” he stated.
