Health Minister says Joseph Budna “disrupted service” at Corozal Hospital

By Aaron Humes: According to Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard, Joseph Budna, sometime journalist and online provocateur, crossed the line recently by apparently disrupting vital medical service at the Corozal Community Hospital, has failed the professional standards of journalism.

Budna’s ‘highly inappropriate,’ ‘deeply concerning and unacceptable behavior’ included placing a camera in the face of the Acting Chief of Staff, disrupting hospital work, and compromising the well-being of patients, a statement from the Ministry contended.

Journalists are to carry out their roles, per the Minister, “with integrity, respect, and adherence to professional standards,” and be “factual and respectful,” though the Ministry reserves its duty “to protect our staff from any form of harassment or harm whether it comes from criminal elements or individuals masquerading as journalists’ (perhaps a reference to the recent events at San Ignacio Hospital where doctors were menaced while treating a shooting victim alleged to be involved in criminal activity).

“We want to make it unequivocally clear that such disruptive behavior will not be tolerated in any of our healthcare facilities. We urge all individuals, including those in the media, to conduct themselves in a manner that upholds the dignity and professionalism of our healthcare system. There are proper channels and protocols for reporting and addressing concerns, and we expect all parties to adhere to these procedures. The Ministry will take all necessary steps to ensure the protection of our healthcare staff and the uninterrupted delivery of medical services. We will continue to support and defend our healthcare professionals against any form of undue interference or harassment,” the statement concludes.
