By Breaking Belize News Staff: Elroy Williams, 25, an MMA fighter from Lords Bank, is behind bars despite his emotional plea in court. Accused of attempted murder over six years ago, Williams appeared before Justice Nigel Pilgrim in the High Court after being on the run for over two years and being picked up by GI3 police in Belmopan on Tuesday.
Williams, who had been evading court for almost two years, failed to convince the court with his tearful story of family tragedy and personal obligations. Williams told the court that his father had just died and that it was his son’s birthday. He also told the court that he has an upcoming MMA fight scheduled in San Pedro. Admitting to running from the police, his bail was revoked.
Williams is charged with the attempted murder of Michael Jones in a 2018 incident described as a crime of passion due to a love triangle over a woman. Unrepresented in court today, he was informed of his rights and that his attorney, Leroy Banner, would represent him tomorrow. If convicted, Williams faces a minimum of 15 to 25 years imprisonment.
