By Aaron Humes: A mother and daughter will be going back to jail for two years on a charge of grievous harm for an attack that occurred more than a decade ago in Sandhill, Belize District.
After a nine-member jury found Ormencia Pou-Swift, 45; her mother, Irene Budd, 68; and her brother, 34-year-old Aaron Fuentes guilty in April, High Court Justice Nigel Pilgrim issued their sentences on Friday for the attack on Gilbert Blair, for which they originally faced a charge of attempted murder.
Meanwhile, Fuentes had been remanded to jail for two years and was released on time served after calculations for aggravating and mitigating factors.
Justice Pilgrim took note that the attack was joint; that Blair lost vision in one of his eyes and was left unable to work from 2011 to 2016; that several deadly instruments were used, namely a machete, hammer, and iron, and that there was no justification for the attack and nothing to mitigate the crime.
The High Court had previously decided that the women were not in the majority responsible for the more than a decade’s delay in hearing the trial and this was accounted for in their sentencing.
However, while Budd expressed remorse for her actions, Pou did not. As for Fuentes, he was found to have instigated the brawl with Blair before the women intervened.
Fuentes and Blair had an altercation at a restaurant in Sandhill on September 4, 2011, which escalated to a violent brawl involving the women.
