By Aaron Humes: Police announced charges for three Belize City residents this afternoon concerning the aggravated burglary at Courts in Belmopan. Police conducted several searches which led to the recovery of some cellphones and laptops and have since arrested and charged Randy Slusher, Tyra Diaz, and Roy Alvarez for the crime of handling stolen goods.

Slusher and Diaz appeared before a Magistrate on the joint charge this morning, to which the former pleaded guilty as well to a separate charge. He conceded that the items were found on him at Diaz’s Consuelo Street home and that he knew they were stolen.

Slusher was found with a black and orange RadioShack backpack valued at $129 and a Samsung cell phone valued at $1,798. He was fined a total of $1,250 and cost of court due by October 31, in default a total of 13 months in prison. Diaz’s charges were withdrawn.

This afternoon, Roy Alvarez, 26, of Zacaranda Street, pleaded guilty to handling a stolen black Dell laptop valued at $2,499. At first he claimed he had paid $200 for the laptop off the streets without knowing it was stolen until police so informed him.

But later he changed his story and told the Magistrate that he believed the item was stolen after his plea was rejected on the basis that he could not not know that the laptop was stolen and plead guilty anyway. He was fined $750 and cost of court by October 31, in default seven months in prison.

Even though Slusher and Alvarez pleaded guilty and were fined, both were escorted back into custody today, transferred to Belmopan and handed over to police in that jurisdiction as they are expected to be levied with other charges in connection to the Courts Belmopan burglary.
