By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In another significant update for this year’s Independence Day celebrations in Belize City, the route for the Independence Day Uniform and People’s Parade has been further changed but will still focus exclusively on the Southside. The parade will now conclude at Berger Field on Vernon St. and not the Belize City Civic Center as previously announced.
The Belize City Council stated at 2:00 pm on Friday that the official new parade route “has been adjusted due to unusual flooding in some areas of the city caused primarily by the effects of the king tides experienced over the past week, coupled with fluvial flooding from the Belize River.”
“This decision was made in consultation with all relevant stakeholders to prioritize the health and safety of our students and other participants,” the Belize City Council further added.
The newly revised 21st Day Uniform and People’s Parade, which starts at 9:30 am, will see students assemble on Regent and Albert Streets. From the House of Culture, also known as Government House, the parade will proceed along Yarborough Road, Queen Charlotte St, right onto Fairweather Street, Dolphin Street, Magazine Road, and left onto Vernon Street, ending at Berger Field.
The Independence Day Ceremony will now be held at Government House at 8:00 am instead of Memorial Park.
Participants and spectators are advised to take note of these changes to ensure a smooth and enjoyable celebration. The adjustment comes after complaints that North Front Street, in the vicinity of Pickstock and Victoria Streets, and other areas flood in the mornings due to high tide.
Additionally, the parade route change will benefit Southside businesses that were unable to enjoy the benefits of the Carnival Parade this year, as it was moved to the Northside.
The 2024 celebrations are being held under the theme ‘A Nation Proud and Free: Belize @ 43!’.
