By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize City Council announced at 1:25 pm on Friday that the Independence Day Ceremony will now be held at Government House at 8:00 am instead of Memorial Park on Saturday
This announcement follows the change of the Independence Day Uniform and People’s Parade, which will now be held exclusively on the Southside of Belize City due to flooding in certain areas of the old capital, such as North Front Street, in the vicinity of Pickstock and Victoria Streets, and other areas that flood in the mornings due to high tide.
The Belize City Council stated at 2:00 pm on Friday that the official new parade route “has been adjusted due to unusual flooding in some areas of the city caused primarily by the effects of the king tides experienced over the past week, coupled with fluvial flooding from the Belize River.”
“This decision was made in consultation with all relevant stakeholders to prioritize the health and safety of our students and other participants,” the Belize City Council further added.
Initially, on Friday morning, it was announced that the parade would end at the Belize City Civic Center. However, a further change stated that the parade will now conclude at Berger Field on Vernon St. and not the Belize City Civic Center as previously announced. This means the parade will be much shorter than the two miles covered by the traditional parade from Memorial Park on the Northside to Wesley College on the Southside.
The newly revised 21st Day Uniform and People’s Parade will start at 9:30 am. Students from city high schools and other participating organizations will gather on Regent and Albert Streets. From Government House, which houses the House of Culture, the parade will advance to Yarborough Road in the Yabra area, Queen Charlotte St, right onto Fairweather Street, Dolphin Street, Magazine Road, and left onto Vernon Street, ending at Berger Field.
The 2024 celebrations are being held under the theme ‘A Nation Proud and Free: Belize @ 43!’.
