By Aaron Humes: A man accused of killing his cousin and attempting to kill another cousin was ordered a competency hearing in the High Court on Friday by Justice Nigel Pilgrim.
33-year-old, Jaime Marin, a resident of Caye Caulker Village, Belize District, represented by attorney Richard “Dickie” Bradley who appeared virtually, was told that that the doctor who examined him will come to the court to give evidence as to whether he is fit or not fit to stand trial, and to understand the proceedings in court in his trial.
The hearing has been set for Thursday, October 10.
Marin is on remand for two criminal offenses of murder and attempted murder. It is alleged that on October 22, 2019, he murdered Isaac Marin and attempted to murder Carlos Marin, his two cousins, during an incident on Caye Caulker.
Doctor Jorge Matus has declared Marin unfit to stand trial after four previous psychiatric evaluations.
Marin was out on bail earlier this year but after he failed to show up to court on his last court date, June 6, his bail was revoked by Justice Nigel Pilgrim and he was remanded to prison. His father had told the court then that he had been having difficulties controlling Marin, bringing him to the court for his case and getting him to take his medication.
Bradley asked the court to consider granting bail back to Marin, submitting that prison is not the place for a person in Marin’s case. The court declined, setting aside the matter for a later time.
