By Horace Palacio: Belize will introduce new banknotes featuring national heroes George Price and Philip Goldson, the Central Bank confirmed last week. The announcement follows Prime Minister John Briceño’s earlier remarks on the matter.
The redesigned currency will celebrate Belize’s heritage and incorporate enhanced security features to combat counterfeiting. While the Queen’s image will be replaced, the Central Bank assured that the value of the Belizean dollar will remain unchanged, pegged to the US dollar at a 2-to-1 rate.
The new designs will be unveiled early next year, with the banknotes expected to enter circulation later in 2025. A transition period will allow the public to familiarize themselves with the new notes.
The move to honor Price and Goldson on the currency is seen as a significant step in recognizing Belize’s national identity and journey toward self-determination.
