By Horace Palacio: Belize’s Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca called for urgent climate action and global cooperation in his address to the United Nations General Assembly, highlighting the plight of small island developing states (SIDS) disproportionately affected by climate change.
Fonseca emphasized that while SIDS like Belize are bearing the brunt of the climate crisis, the G20 nations are responsible for 80% of global emissions. He urged these major economies to consider the future of SIDS in their growth strategies.
The minister also expressed Belize’s solidarity with Haiti and called for the removal of Cuba from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism. He further advocated for an end to the “colonial domination and apartheid” imposed on the Palestinian people.
Fonseca outlined Belize’s progress in sustainable development, citing the Belize Blue Bond Project, a partnership with the U.S. through the Millennium Challenge Corporation, and the Belize Education Upliftment Project.
