Jamaican national and teen girlfriend charged with drug trafficking in Belize City

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 29-year-old Jamaican national, Chavar Christopher Lowe, and his 17-year-old girlfriend appeared in Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday to face charges of possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply. The couple was charged after authorities discovered 87.8 grams of marijuana during a search of Lowe’s residence on October 1, 2024.

Lowe, who pleaded guilty to simple possession but denied drug trafficking, claimed that the marijuana found at his home was for personal use. However, the prosecutor rejected his guilty plea for possession and will proceed with drug trafficking charges.

The prosecutor raised concerns about Lowe’s potential to flee the country, as his legal status remains uncertain. Despite objections, the court granted Lowe bail, setting it at $1,500 with strict conditions, including the surrender of his passport, a travel ban, and regular reporting to the police. His 17-year-old girlfriend was also granted bail of $1,500, but she will be released only into the care of an adult due to her minor status.

Both are set to return to court on December 2, 2024.
