By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Special Envoy for Development of Families and Children Rossana Briceno is raising awareness about breast cancer.

Breast cancer, characterized by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the breast, can be life-threatening if left untreated.

Briceno highlighted that early detection is crucial, as the earliest stage, known as “in situ,” is not life-threatening and can often be treated effectively.

In Belize, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, with 85 cases reported in 2022, according to the Global Cancer Observatory.

The disease resulted in 21 deaths, marking it as the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the country.

Throughout October, Briceno aims to share vital information about breast cancer, emphasizing the importance of regular screening and early detection to save lives. She encourages all women to prioritize their health and stay informed.
