By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On October 4, 2024, the Sugar Industry Research and Development Institute (SIRDI) hosted a discussion on fusarium infection in sugar cane at Centro Escolar Mexico.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the fusarium infection seems to be part of the effects of climate change, and appears to be present in cane fields in Mexico and Belize.
The discussions are part of day 2 activities.
On Thursday, field visits were conducted to observe affected fields in the Corozal area.
Participating in the discussion was Minister of Agriculture Jose Abelardo Mai, who is also a sugar cane farmer himself.
